Love You Too
Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2011
Pastel on dark red coloured pastel paper of two native birds to Australia. The Rainbow Lorikeet is a nectar loving bird that feeds amongst flowering gums and also enjoys grass seeds and can be tempted to visit by leaving out wild bird seed in the garden. These two birds are snuggled together enjoying the warmth of the sunshine on their backs. If you check closely you will see that the one on the right has it's eyes closed having a nap.
This pastel artwork is my latest attempt to do an artwork of one of our native birds. After doing my most recent works of Australian parrots, and having sold my favourite of these, I decided to do another set of pastels featuring these lively and brightly coloured birds.
I have spent a lot of my time planning and changing the background on this work from the original scene. I wanted the focus to be on the birds and the lighting to come from the back silhouetting the birds against the background foliage.
I usually leave the work and came back to it fresh in my next session and this time I also consulted widely on how to complete the work in the site Paintings I Love. Armed with some excellent advice I added further lighting to the background to make sure that the whole scene worked properly and the birds looked like they were part of the surrounds and not "cut" into it. I then spent some time walking back and forth putting in little details in the mid tones of the heads and other areas of mid tones in the feathers on the chests and darker sections in the shadow areas to help bring the birds right out and give them form.
This work will be presented at the Berwick Art Society during the year and results will be updated.
