Hello! Hello!

Hello! Hello!
Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2011
Pastel portrait on paper of red parrots in an aviarie at a local stud. An upcoming monthly demonstration at one of the guilds I attend is on the subject of birds in pencil. The closet thing that I have in stock and that I work in, let alone having enough colours to do justice to the beautiful little parrots we have in Australia, are my pastel pencils. So, pastel pencil it is!
During summer I kept my appointment and did a photo shoot at a local stud. They not only breed the most beautiful quarter horses and appaloosas but they have huge aviaries of so many different kinds of birds that it is hard to know where to begin to describe them all.
Coral, who runs the stud takes in orphaned and sick pet birds to bring them back to health, then she loves them so much she can't bear to see them leave so keeps them in luxury in her huge aviaries with all the new friends they make there.
It is so wonderful to walk around with so many little faces yelling out hello! hello! and twittering away at you as they climb along the aviary walls following you as you walk!
This of course makes photographing them a lot easier! I got some terrific shots showing the fun and friendly character of some of the parrots. I have already done a charcoal drawing of two of the birds called "Hello!" which is exactly what they were saying as I took their picture. This little drawing is the second artwork from the photo shoot and I hope there will be many more to come.
