Dromana Sunset
Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2011
Pastel on pastel paper derived from several photos of the shoreline and sunsets on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. A lot of little details have been deleted and the colours have been modified to suite the mood. Originally intended as a practice piece in the studio, the final work has come out to a standard that I am very happy with and proud to show. I combined several scenes and photos to achieve this work. The sky area was from a sunset over our property based in the rural area of the Peninsula, so it was a bit tricky combining all the elements together and making them look like they were all from the same scene.
One advantage of having the computer skills also means that what looks like a fairly ordinary photo on first glance or even a good one, can be made into something spectacular as a fine artwork with some work in Photoshop using filters, layers, combining photos, as well as cropping and deleting items that are taking your attention away from what you want to be the focal point. I took the time to take several shots on the shoreline at Safety Bach during the day. I liked the beach and the water but the time of day was all wrong and I thought it needed to have much more colour and atmosphere, so I changed it to a sunset and deleted the things that detracted from an attractive scene, such as the line of rocks protecting the top of the beach from erosion in the original photo.
During summer and into the year I have been busily working on enlarging my photo collection for practice in the studio and future works. Not every one is a basis of a work in itself but the nice thing about computer skills is that you can take as many photos as you like and merge them together to make what ever you want. This has proven to be an invaluable resource and without them I would not have been able to do as much during the year as I would like.
The Victorian coastline, is some of the most beautiful you can see anywhere in the world. No matter what time of year there is always something amazing to look at if you take the time to go for a drive. I love promoting our state, as it is so far away from most of the rest of the world such as the USA, England, Europe and parts of Asia and many people do not get to see what it has to offer such as the wonderful sunsets, beaches, countryside and local wildlife that I get to see all the time.
This pastel started out as a practice piece, one of those ones I do just for myself, to help increase my pastel skills. I had no idea it would come out as well as it has, especially the rendering of the waves, but since I am so happy with it, I am moved to share it on my web site. I hope others will enjoy it as well.
