MPRG Rose

Year: 2013
2nd place - monthly qualifier of Artist of the Year competition for Berwick Artist's Society, Section A - Experienced Artists (February, 2013)
Pastel painting taken from photography by Janice Mills at the rose garden near the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. The piece was specifically created for the demonstration at the Berwick Artists Society in February 2013. It was very well received with a lot of positive comments and awarded second place in Section A for Experienced Artists. It has also gained a lot of praise on the web when promoted through social media and sold immediately.
I have never been especially good at drawing or painting flowers, last year I made an effort to try to improve my skills in this area. Roses, in particular are a popular subject for art collectors and many people like to see paintings of them in their homes. They are a favourite flower of mine as well and I have always admired people who could do these flowers justice.
My problem is still that I get lost in all the patterns that the petals create. As you start drawing up a rose the petals get tighter and the pattern harder to follow as you get into the centre of the flower. Without some methods to work these out my roses were less than satisfactory. This year I will be studying with excellent artists from whom I should gain more tips on how to approach subjects like roses and not get lost in the maze of patterns going on so more efforts may be forthcoming.
I tried to relax and enjoy the journey with this work. I wasn't too worried about a direct copy of the photo, after all it was my photo and I didn't have to. Plus the point is to make the painting your own, not a mere copy of nature! There should be a natural flow as you work your way around the picture as well, this took a bit of thinking but I seem to be getting better.
As roses go, I would not say this is my very best work. I am happy with achievements I have made in it, but at the same time I am looking forward to improving on it in the future. The comments it has received has shown that it is painting that will attract positive feedback and a lot of people like it. That is something that I am always happy to hear and hope that as I improve will keep coming! It has been sold and will be hanging in the home of someone who will get a lot from it in the future. The award it won on it's only outing with me is also a nice bonus!
