Parrots done in charcoal on canvas. I have never heard of doing charcoal on this surface and have not done any charcoal drawing for years! I usually use it as an outlining tool for painting or pastels when I want to get areas marked up and never on canvas as a finished artwork. This was a new challenge and I just had to try it! |

I just spent time during summer at the local stud farm where they have aviaries full of fantastic birds. These two guys looked so much like they were leaning over to say hello to me, and so full of character that I just had to make them the subject of this experiment. The canvas was primed and already painted in a light coating of yellow ochre ready for use. I have used a little pastel in the background to give it some texture but have kept the colours to a minimum. The black was built up in layers which I sealed between each one so that I could get the blacks as dark as possible. I noticed that without sealing I was just rubbing off the layer underneath. I also used white pastel to highlight where the light was touching the birds to help give a dramatic tonal range - which I hope has worked. |

This type of method is a very new thing for me, it only took an hour or so to complete as it came together very quickly - and it was loads of fun! One thing I am discovering from year to year is that there is always a new method, medium, or mix of them to try out. No chance of getting stale or bored. |
