Parrots done in pencil on paper. After having done my little charcoal on canvas I thought I would do some drawing practice in pencil, something that I haven't done a lot of lately! Art tutors will tell any student that they must keep up their practice in drawing and when you let it slide it really does impact on your paintings! |

After my recent photo shoot at the local stud farm where they have aviaries full of fantastic birds I decided that the photo with these three looked so full of character that I just had to make them the subject of this drawing. I have used a only pencil on the drawing and no background at all to allow the birds and their perch to take up the whole interest of the work. The black was built up in layers which I sealed between each one so that I could get the blacks as dark as possible. I noticed that without sealing I was just rubbing off the layer underneath. The white paper gave the highlights where the light was touching the birds to help give a dramatic tonal range - which meant I had to be careful as I worked so that the surface keep nice and clean where I wasn't drawing. |

This type of method is a nothing new for for me, in my teens when I had very few materials I spent a lot of time in my little art room that my father built for me, practicing my drawing skills - mostly on horses at that stage! the work took a bit over two hours or so to complete as it came together reasonably quickly - and it was loads of fun! One thing I am discovering from year to year is that even when there is a new method, medium, or mix of them to try out, returning to the basics is always a good idea. As a recent tutor said at a workshop - "practice. practice, practice and develop your own style". |
