Near Cape Schanck 2010
Medium: Oil
Base: Canvas
Year: 2010
1st place - monthly qualifier McClelland Guild of Artists "Artist of the Year" competition (November 2010)
Original oil painting of the sea breaking on the shoreline at Cape Schanck Victoria, Australia. The scene is derived from photographs taken by Janice Mills of the shoreline during 2009 on a day trip for resource material. This is a follow up work from the set of five pastels done during 2010. The set of five pastels are also on this web site. Number 1 was sold at the framers before it was put in a frame.
Working as a graphic design contractor during parts of the year means never really being sure when or for how long I will get in the studio to paint. Having such an unpredictable schedule at times and little time to plan works or get out to paint on site means that having a library of images has made it easier to have a good subject to paint or draw when I do have some time to get into the studio.
The advantage of having computer skills also means and that what looks like a fairly ordinary photo on first glance, can be made into something spectacular with some work in Photoshop. Adding to that the enjoyment of using other mediums means that I get a chance to experiment with the subject at my leisure before committing to an oil painting. Sometimes the experiment turns into the final subject when things fall into place and you make the decision to keep on with what you are working on and see where it leads.
During the cold and wet months during winter my library has helped me to enjoy many hours in the studio with the sound of raindrops on the roof, while I have been happily working away. The seascape photos from Cape Schanck area, amongst others, have inspired a lot of work during the winter - which without them I would not have been able to do. The beautiful colours in the water and the strength and movement in the waves along the Victorian coastline, I am pleased to say, have been captured in the photos. That is what I have aimed to capture my series of pastels dedicated to the Cape Schanck area.
It has been my aim to do an oil painting based on the Cape Schanck series and towards the end of 2010 I have finally been able to produce this work which was presented at the McClelland Guild of Artists demonstration for November.
This presentation was the one scheduled for this year that I was most looking forward to and had planning for. The demonstrator was David Chen, an artist of immense skill and a fantastic teacher. He is, of all the artists in Australia right now, the one I admire the most. His works are, for want of a better word, absolutely breath-taking. It was David, at my first weekend workshop over 6 years ago, who helped me relax and not be afraid to step out and just paint. I owe him a lot for taking away that horrible fear and intimidation of the blank canvas.
Now six years later, it was my pleasure to watch him at work again and to have my work judged by him. I am also very pleased to say that he awarded this painting first place for the month of November. Thank you again David for giving me another bit of encouragement to keep trying new things and keep getting back into my studio to work toward being the best artist I can be.
