Oil Painting from the sea shore in the suburb of Brighton in Melbourne Victoria. This painting which is pointing north towards the city of Melbourne was inspired by a photograph originally taken by Matt Irwin. |
It is by no means a direct copy of the original photo, as Matt has taken his photograph in black and white and I have taken artistic licence by removing items for the painting. |
I was very much attracted to the "theme" of the photograph. The row of birds in the foreground and the intense light hitting the buildings in the background. |
Cityscapes are also in the category of subjects that I have veered away from over the years. This year (2010) I have decided however, to face my fears and attempt to take on more variety in my works. |
This has included learning new media, painting on new surfaces and attempting a new subject matter. So if a scene grabs my attention, or I suddenly get inspiration from any source the plan is to attack it with gusto, try my best and see what happens. |
Melbourne from Brighton, "told me" what colours to use, what medium to use and what size to make the work. I have taken a theme and made it my own. It is now a painting with its own message and feel and I have put part of myself into it. I hope viewers will come away with something from it as well. |
My thanks to Matt again, for allowing me to draw inspiration from his wonderful photography. |
