Foreshore Wattle Point

Foreshore Wattle Point
Medium: Water colour
Base: Paper
Year: 2008
This is another piece inspired by my recent visit to Wattle Point, Victoria, Australia. Although the colours have been altered for more drama, the basis theme has been retained.
The original colours in the photograph for this artwork were very grey with not too many highlights, which worked nicely for the photograph but failed badly when I originally tried translating it to a painting, so I decided to take a different approach and use the theme of the photograph which was what originally attracted me to try a painting, and change the colours to introduce warm and cool colours with a bit more contrast. I also decided to simplify the beach a little by using a small scattering of pebbles rather than the huge amount that were originally there.
The view is rather "different", as the viewing angle is steep - as it was when I was looking down at the original scene. This gives a bit a of an unusual feel to the picture, but again I was experimenting not only with a medium that I have frankly avoided for many years but also with trying to look at subjects from different angle than I am accustomed to.
My thoughts are that it is all too easy to get into ruts when composing works, selecting the mediums we use, the colours we fall back into using and even the ways in which we look at a subject. The results of this process are not always as close to the perfection I am constantly aiming at, but they are important landmarks along the way. In every endeavour there are improvements somewhere which I am proud of and pleased to display.
