Pastel on beige paper sketched at a life drawing class at Artgallop Gallery in Narre Warren, Victoria. The drawing was done in a twenty minute sitting during one of the regular Saturday morning classes. The usual routine for a class is to start with several five to ten minute quick drawings. We then take a break and have up to three or four twenty minute poses.
The idea of these life drawing sessions for me is to loosen up and quickly get the form of the model. It is a good way to improve my skills of observation as well as learning to quickly zone in on the focal points, light sources and the tonal range of what I am looking at.
Humans have never been my best subject so getting out of my comfort zone in a group of artists of varying skill levels is a great opportunity. Sometimes a fresh eye on what you are doing is just what you need. It can also be very supportive and encouraging when we pick out particularly nice parts of works we are all doing.
This model had some great poses and it is hard to say which one is better than the other. I want to show a few of my works this year at the Pastel Society of Victoria so have finally chosen this one as the first to pop into a frame.
One great thing I have noticed as I have been doing the life drawing is that my observational skills have improved significantly. I am also seeing every subject I attempt now as not so much of a challenge. The ability to break down what I am looking at into simple shapes and blocks of colour and light and shade is coming more easily, so my subject range is expanding. It is nice be be known for my skills in animal portraiture, but even better to be known for my skills as a talented fine artist no matter what the subject!
Hopefully as I keep practicing on all the new subjects I am attempting this year I will be able to find some more successes that I can post to this site to share.
