Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2011
This rose pastel is the first floral artwork for 2011. 2011 looks like the year of florals and still life. I have a commission for a still life and because of the better weather during the end of 2010 the roses in the Mornington Art Gallery Rose Garden have done especially well. This prompted a photo shoot which has left me with an abundance of material for floral and still life paintings and drawings for the rest of the year.
The idea for this artwork is due to 2011 demonstrations covering the topic of florals done in pastel that will be held during the year. I love a challenge and I now have plenty of material to start on from recent photo shoots.
As my experience with drawing and painting flowers is minimal I have started with a single flower. This rose was a very unusual shape to my eye and that is why it caught my attention. It has given me a chance to try to sort out the complicated patterns created by the petals and the light and shade on all of them with out getting too lost in it all.
I have altered the colours in places and deleted some of the leaves to help give the dimension and depth that I saw in the photo. I found that is was all too easy to flatten the whole thing if I wasn't careful. I also used white pastel to highlight where the light was touching the flower to help increase the tonal range - which I hope has worked.
Roses and floral works are a very new thing for me, it took a couple of hours or so to complete and it came together much quicker than I expected - it was also more fun than I though it would be.
I am discovering from year to year that what I wasn't interested in last year may be what I want to try out this year. I think that is a good thing as I have seen many artists stick to the same subject matter for years. They get extremely good at it but when called on to do something else, they fail to produce the same quality. That is something that I have decided I want to avoid, which means attacking any subject, any medium and lots and lots of practice. No chance of getting stale or bored.
