Acrylic painting derived from a photograph of a cow and calf grazing in a paddock on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. |
Ever since I painting I Love My Mum! last year, I have wanted to do a similar painting of a cow and calf. Since we had an acrylic landscape coming up as a demonstration for this year at McClelland guild of Artists I thought it a good time to give it a try. |
I love My Mum! is an acrylic painting and the vivid colours that acrylic offers was an effect that I really wanted for this new painting. |
After a bit of research I was able to get the pose of the cattle that I wanted but they were the wrong colour and the scenery was all wrong. I got to work in Photoshop and totally reworked the background to make it up with colours and a simplicity that I wanted and gave both the cow and calf new colours. |
The Purple in the background foliage balances out with the mauve grey of the shadows in the cow and calf, these were also not in the original scene which meant that the photo looked very flat. |
It took quite a bit of layering with the acrylics to get the blends and colours right, but not exactly what I wanted, so the finishing touch for the work was to wait until it was totally dry and to painting over the grass, the sky and the shadow areas of the cow and calf with glazes of oil paints. These were very thin and in a similar colour to what I was painting over. It helped to pull each area together and blend and soften where colour transitions were happening... just what I wanted. |
I have the "story book" painting that I was after. |
It has only been shown at McClelland Guild of Artists, where it was awarded a third prize and some very nice comments from the demonstrating artist who said she particularly like the shading I had introduced to the cow and calf. One of my favourite bits as well. |
