Ros's Cat

Ros's Cat
Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2010
Pastel portrait of a friend's Ragdoll × Siamese cat. The pastel paper is a dark crimson colour to contrast the colours in the cat's coat. This is the first feline portrait I have attempted in over twenty years.
Being a professional artist means that you need to be prepared to attempt any commission that may come your way. Having completed quite a few portraits of horses and dogs recently I decided to move on to cats, after suddenly realising that I had not drawn one in over twenty years. I think the last member of the cat family I drew was a male lion with the lovely big mane on his neck that they tend to display.
During a visit to the ArtGallop Gallery Ros kindly held one of her beautiful young cats for me to photograph so that I could get in some overdue practice. After all, what do you say if a client asks you to do a portrait of their champion cat or beloved moggy ... sorry can you wait a few weeks while I get some practice in? So here he is, what will probably be the first of several more pics of our beautiful feline friends.
I chose pastel for this picture as the softness of his coat just screamed to be done in this medium and to be honest, it is very forgiving if you make a mistake and need to fix it. It is also a less expensive alternative when getting back up to speed.
It is my hope that the cat lovers out there will enjoy looking at my venture back into feline portraiture.
