Acrylic painting of a "paintaloosa" mare and foal on particle board. Framed in plain wood frame. Taken from original photograph by Janice Mills at Corvid Stud. |
On a visit to the Corvid Quarter-Horse and Appaloosa Stud in Pearcedale (Victoria, Australia), I had my camera with me to take some photos as resource material for future paintings and hopefully commissions. |
It was fortunate because as I was walking around I saw this mare and foal in the "perfect" pose. It was one of those lucky shots. The sun was bright so the lighting was great. The horses were standing, as if posing for me. I quickly got a couple of photos before they moved. |
After that, the idea for the painting was a long time in the making. The print out I made of the photo lay in a drawer for nearly 18 months. I think it must be fate. I was very kindly given a load of acrylics by another artist, the McClelland Guild of Artists monthly meeting for the next month was to be acrylics and I was entering a competition at a new gallery where the subjects were to be horses. |
I wanted to do something new and suddenly remembered the mare and foal. This is my first attempt at a 100% acrylic painting. I usually use it to block in works and finish off in oils. The painting had other ideas. At about the half way point, it demanded to be done in all acrylics... well it is a way to learn and not get stuck in one style or medium! |
