Medium: Pastel
Year: 2008
Pastel portrait on white art paper. The background has been removed and the subject has been kept to a simple style. The aim was not not to look like a photo but an artwork reflecting the strength and beauty of the horse. Colour palette has been kept minimal and details left out to keep to the desired effect.
Hendy, as he is affectionately known, is an unofficial ambassador for the Friesian breed of horses in Victoria. Friesians are fairly new to the show ring in Australia, so he attracts attention where ever he goes.
Better know by some as Hendrik fan Frisco, Hendy is very special to Roanna, coming into the family after tragically losing her first pony several years earlier. I have had the pleasure of riding Hendy and the portrait I have done of him reflects what a joy he is to ride. A powerful looking horse with the softest mouth and very responsive to commands.
He regularly competes and is keen to do anything asked of him. He is a kind natured horse that has proven that he can be ridden by novice and expert alike. He is still young, only rising 7 years and is now also attending pony club with a young rider, further showing the versatility of this horse.
Roanna is thrilled with the portrait as are the owners of the Groveborn Friesian stud where she and Hendy regularly stay. I couldn't wait to do his portrait after meeting with Roanna and Hendy and it was great to see how well it was received.
