It is the intent, of these commentaries, to give an insight into the thinking behind many of the works in this site. I have also included my thoughts on subjects that may be of interest.

These commentaries will be published from time to time.

Artist of the Year Awards 2011 - McClelland Guild of Artists
Monday, 05 December 2011 The past year has been a very busy one. I have completed a Diploma of Management and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. These two qualifications were to not only help me find employment but to make sure that I can run my emerging fine and graphic art business. The worldwide economy during 2011 has been very bad for a lot of people and especially hard on artists because discretionary spending is one of the things that people stop when they fear their financial future. There has been a shortage of jobs in the graphic arts field as well as a slump in art sales.

Peninsula Art Society Monthly Demonstration November 2011
Tuesday, 22 November 2011 I have not seen Robert demonstrate before but had heard his name around as a very fine and experienced artist. From the beginning of the demonstration he came across as a very down to earth person with a very firm grip on reality and the diatribe that can come out of the media concerning art and the modern art scene in particular!

McClelland Guild of Artists Monthly Demonstration November 2011
Sunday, 06 November 2011 Andrew Gemmill has been tutoring at the McClelland Guild for over ten years and is a well known and established artist. Andrew confided that he is not always too confident when giving demonstrations but from what we could see as viewers ha came across as a knowledgeable and informative artist and demonstrator. Andrew's favourite size for painting water colours is around A4, he finds that larger works are a bit more unmanageable and informed us that many famous artists from the past including Turner, worked on a similar size.

Berwick Art Society Monthly Demonstration October 2011
Monday, 31 October 2011 Ev Hales is an extraordinary artist. I know her from AGRA (Australian Guild of Realist Artists). She is an established member and I was accepted into the guild just over a year ago. Ev exhibits widely and is well known for her teaching and demonstrations which are always entertaining and very informative. We were lucky to have her demonstrate for us at Berwick and a good size crowd attended.

Pastel Society of Victoria Monthly Demonstration October 2011
Wednesday, 5 October 2011 As many demonstrating artists do, Lyn brought along some sample of her completed works to show as she deonstrated. I had the oppportunity to have a chat with her before the demo and found her to be a very approachable and generous artist, very willing to share her understanding and ideas.

Berwick Art Society Monthly Demonstration September 2011
Sunday, 3 October 2011 I was so happy to see Margo Vigorito as the demonstrator for September, I never tire of watching her paint and explain her techniques. She is very widely travelled and even in the fun of her demonstrations she doesn't forget the very important skills and techniques required for good rather than average paintings. Her style is very bold and expressive and as her paintings show, she takes the normal look and realism of a scene and uses the intelligent use of colour to create her own unique look.

Peninsula Art Society Monthly Demonstration September 2011
Monday, 19 September 2011 Fiona Bilbrough is a consumate professional. Whether it be oil painting or pastels she approaches her job with an organised mind and work area. Rather than be pigeon holed into one medium or another Fiona likes to change every now and then and spend several months stretching her boundaries with another medium. A practice that I do as well, not only to keep skills up but also to help keep the mind fresh.

Pastel Society of Victoria Monthly Demonstration September 2011
Tuesday, 6 September 2011 Six degrees of separation is not just a phrase, it comes up in life more often that you think. Whilst researching Robert on the web, I was interested to read that he was trained and mentored by Terry Collins. Terry was a well known artist in AGRA and a respected art teacher. He was also the father of my brother in-law! We have two of his works is hanging in the house. Robert is a vice president of AGRA and I am now a member, so it's an interesting circle that we all travel in.

Berwick Art Society Monthly Demonstration August 2011
Thursday, 25 August 2011 Peter Smales is well known for his beautiful seascapes but for this demo he wanted to do something with a bit of a different theme. Still keeping near the water he based his subject on a waterfront area with docks and large container ships and buildings in the background.
