Getting RestartedIssued on Sunday, 30 September 2007 Resuming a fine art career can be overwhelming, this commentary provides a few thoughts on how to get restarted. Resuming A Fine Art CareerNo body will ever tell you that getting back into full production as a fine artist after a significant break is easy. After 20 years concentrating on my graphic design career I finally have a studio that allowed me to rebuild my fine art calling. I have met others who have faced this with a lot of fear. To them and to you I can only say that you must have faith in yourself and also to give yourself the time to let the creativity come back to you. It is easy to be too critical of yourself, I know, but keep the long term vision in you head. It doesn't hurt to try to also remember why you started painting or drawing in the first place - because you enjoyed it. My vision is my own style. Looking at a painting or drawing I have done, and seeing it tell a story, or stir an emotion. I also like to discover something new in a scene that I didn't expect. For me getting re-started included joining a reputable art society, so that I can network with other artists, display my works and attend demonstrations and workshops. This can be very supportive and the feedback can help direct you, even if that means you disagree and do something totally opposite! Taking a sketch book and camera with you on holidays is a great idea. It also helps to have a sketch book in the lounge so it is nearby. You may have a minute spare and an idea pops into your head. It is time to do it, really you can't draw too much, no matter what the subject is. It all helps you get your "eye" in. I do what I call "speed sketching". Twenty minutes maximum to do a simple drawing in pastel, pencil, charcoal or pen and ink. The medium isn't really important, it is getting a rendition quickly without too much detail. It was surprising how much fun it was and how well the drawings came out. Wrapping up all I can conclude with is don't be afraid, enjoy yourself and don't let anyone talk you out of it. Having a passion in life is a wonderful thing and in such short supply in so many people. You are never too old, it is never too late to regain yours. Janice Mills |
