Pastel portrait, on dark blue art board, of a little dog owned by my nearby neighbours in Pearcedale, Victoria, Australia. As I have seen many times, this little dog loves to go for walks with his owners and I see them on the road we live on quite often. If I am out gong for a walk or working in the front yard we have a chat and I get a chance to say hello to this beautiful little dog. It had not occurred to me until fairly recently to take a photograph of him for an artwork, but I finally got around to it and took several photographs whilst we were chatting one day. |

I think the dog posed for me to be honest. He sat up perfectly and didn't move! I walked around and took several photos and worked on them in Photoshop to remove the background. I wanted to zone in on the dog with no distractions. All that hair and different colours in his coat and those gentle eyes! It was going to be a fun piece to do and I knew straight away that it was going to be a pastel painting. |

My friend Ros Meadmore, who owns the Art Gallop Gallery, asked me to mind the store for her during an exhibition, so that is when I did the painting. It was an opportunity for anyone calling in to see an artist an action and for me to get used to people watching me work. I was happy that I got into the "zone" very quickly and wasn't worried about what was going on around me at all. The work was completed in two hours and the time just flew by. It gets like that when you are doing something you really love and I find it is commonplace in my studio. |

Ros asked me to enter a painting into her recent 2011 Spring Exhibition with the subject of pets. Since I did the work in her gallery it seemed to be the right one to enter. I quickly put Little Fluffy (not his real name) into a spare frame and delivered him to the gallery. I didn't expect any awards for this piece and it wasn't really for sale either. It came as a very nice surprise when I got an email from Ros telling me that it had won a prize! |

It just goes to show, that you really do never know. Just keep on trying and give things a go. You may not get an award or a sale but it will always be a learning experience that you can use. I am just happy that my little painting has done well and added to my award for the year 2011 which had ending up very nicely indeed. |

Animal portraits are a specialty of mine and something that I very much enjoy doing as commissions. Enquiries regarding a commissioned artwork in pastels or oils of a beloved pet in your family can be made through the contact page in this web site. |
